Mild To Profound · From Birth Or Overnight
Hearing Loss Coach
Coaching and mentoring for everyone who lives with hearing loss and communicates through speech, and for the hearing parents raising a child with it
The Role
What A Hearing Loss Coach Does
A hearing loss coach works on the part of hearing loss that no audiogram measures: how you live with it. Your audiologist tests your hearing and fits the technology. A coach works with you on everything that happens after the appointment ends, at school, at work, at home and in company: the conversations you want to hold, the things you need to ask for, and the confidence to do both.
I bring two things to that work. The first is lived experience: I was born with profound hearing loss and have spent thirty-six years in the mainstream hearing world, listening, lipreading and speaking. The second is professional coaching: I am ICF-trained (ICF Level 2 and ACC in progress), so the questions, the listening and the structure of every session are held to a published standard.
Who I Coach
However It Arrived, Whatever Its Degree
Hearing loss in one ear or both, mild or profound, with hearing aids, a cochlear implant or neither. What my clients share is the hearing world: they live, work and connect through spoken language, as I do.
Since Birth Or Childhood
Growing Up With Hearing Loss
The classroom that echoed. The group conversation you followed by watching faces.
Teenagers from 13 and adults who have lived with hearing loss from the start, as I have, and built their own strategies along the way. We refine them for what lies ahead: the next school, the next role, the next relationship.
Hearing Aids
New To Hearing Aids, Or Years In
The first morning you wore them to work, and the first time someone noticed.
Wearing them with confidence in public and at work, making them earn their place across a long day, and knowing what to ask your audiologist next. I have worn hearing aids since before I was two.
Cochlear Implants
Life With A Cochlear Implant
Activation day, and the months while sound turns into speech.
The rooms where sound now reaches you, the conversations that follow, and the confidence to put every gain to use. Your implant team leads the rehabilitation; I work on the life around it.
Sudden Hearing Loss
When It Happened Overnight
One morning the world was quieter, and nothing has sounded the same since.
Returning to work, explaining the change to the people around you, the first loud restaurant, and finding your footing in conversation again. Coaching begins once urgent medical care is done, and helps with everything that follows.
Gradual Hearing Loss
When It Crept Up On You
The television a little louder each year. The dinner conversations you began to sit out.
Hearing that has faded over years, often noticed by others first. We work on naming it without apology, asking for what you need, and staying at the centre of the conversations that matter to you.
Hearing Parents
Raising A Child With Hearing Loss
Diagnosis day, and every appointment after it.
A rare chance to ask someone who was that child anything at all: what your child’s life might look like, what mine has looked like, the good and the bad, and what I would do differently if I could go back.
Who Does What
Three Kinds Of Help, Each With Its Own Job
Hearing loss often calls for more than one professional. Knowing who does what saves time, and makes every appointment count.
Your Clinical Team
Your Hearing
Audiologists, ENT specialists and implant teams.
They diagnose and treat, fit and fine-tune: hearing tests, devices, surgery, programming and rehabilitation. Every clinical question belongs with them.
A Counsellor Or Psychologist
Your Wellbeing
When hearing loss brings anxiety, low mood or grief that needs care.
Emotional distress that needs treatment calls for a qualified counsellor or psychologist. If that is what you need, I will say so, and help you find the right person.
A Hearing Loss Coach
Your Life With It
School, work, relationships and confidence.
Practical, and focused on what comes next: how you show up in the rooms that matter, what you ask for, and the step you choose to take. Lived experience and professional coaching, together.
Questions
Hearing Loss Coaching, Answered
Can a hearing loss coach help after sudden hearing loss?
Yes, once urgent medical care has been sought. If your hearing has changed suddenly in the last few days, see a doctor straight away: sudden hearing loss is treated as a medical emergency, and early treatment matters. Coaching is for the weeks and months that follow, when the medical questions give way to practical ones: work, family, friendships, and how you want to handle each of them.
I have a cochlear implant. Is coaching for me?
Yes, whether activation was last month or many years ago, and whether you are a teenager, an adult, or the parent of a child who has just been implanted. The first year in particular can ask a great deal of patience; coaching gives that year structure, and somewhere to take the setbacks as well as the gains.
Do I need a referral?
No. Most people book directly, starting with a free discovery call. Audiologists and other clinicians can also refer patients, and the Clinicians & Audiologists page explains how a referral works.
